The Friday Grab Bag is a weekly series that highlights fun, unique, and interesting happenings in Colorado libraries, and includes news from the Colorado State Library.

Let’s open the Friday Grab Bag!

Holiday Music

Come in costume for a sing-along to “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” Saturday 12/2 at 2:00 pm at the Old Town Library in Poudre River Public Library District. The party will also feature a live performance, trivia, crafts, and snacks.

Jingle all the way to the Roaring Fork Youth Orchestra Holiday Concert, December 6 at the Rifle Branch Library. After the concert, audience members will have a chance to ask the students questions and see their instruments.

Choral music group Key of She will present Tonal Noel, a holiday concert at the Louisville Public Library, December 16 at 10:30. Stop by to enjoy some seasonal songs.

Festive Crafts

Decorate a gingerbread house at the Kremmling Library, December 11 at 4:15. This activity is open to children in grades K-5; registration is required.

Enter the 5th Annual Gingerbread House Contest at Summit County Library’s Main Branch, now through December 12. Patrons can cast their votes Dec 13-19 to award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes. Open to all ages.

Brighten your holiday home with some new-to-you decorations. Attend the Holiday Decorations & Craft Supply Swap at the Rawlings Library, December 3 from 2:00-4:00 pm.

Community Celebrations

Join the Gypsum Public Library and the Town of Gypsum for their Community Tree Lighting with caroling, Santa Claus, cookies and fireside cocoa! December 9 at 5:00 pm.

Don your PJs and fuzzy slippers—the John C. Fremont Library is hosting a Family Pajama Party and movie screening of “The Polar Express,” December 16 at 2:30 pm.

Bud Werner Memorial Library’s Genealogy Club will hold their annual Holiday Club Meeting, December 7 at 9:30 am. Anyone is welcome to attend; members will celebrate their learning from 2017 and plan projects for 2018.

Winter Reading

What do the cool kids do during the winter? They join the Cool Kids Winter Reading Program at Broomfield Library! Read 3 books from December 15 through January 14 to be entered into a prize drawing. Contact the Children’s Desk for more details.

Lamar Public Library’s Winter Reading Program for all ages runs through January 15. Turn in your reading log for a chance to win the raffle. The library’s goal is to reach 1,000 hours read.

Join a special Holiday PAWS to Read at Lafayette Public Library, December 3 at 1:30 pm. The Santa Paws therapy dog will be ready to listen to holiday stories from kids ages 5-10. Registration is required.

Pick ‘n’ Mix

Get your heart pumping at Vail Public Library, now offering Zumba on Mondays at 5:30. This latin-inspired exercise class joins the library’s existing lineup of yoga and meditation.

Patron Appreciation Day is December 2 at the Mesa County’s Palisade Branch Library. This event takes place in conjunction with the town of Palisade’s annual Olde Fashioned Christmas and offers coffee and cookies to library visitors in appreciation of their support of the library.

Anythink Libraries Wright Farms will host a panel discussion and Q&A, Perspectives From the Vietnam War, December 6 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Moderated by Laura Frank of Rocky Mountain PBS, the panel features Neal Ulevich, Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, Alan Jaffe, Vietnam War veteran, and Dr. Xiansheng Tian, professor of history and Asian studies.

Libraries in the News

From Public Libraries Online: Currie Meyer, manager of the Council Tree Library, wrote about a collaboration between Poudre River Public Library District, the English department at CSU, and a local print shop to offer a community book club focusing on rediscovering classic literature.

What’s New at the Colorado State Library

Digital Collections

The Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection recently added the Stanley Capsules, a company newsletter published by the Stanley Aviation Corporation. Learn more about this unique part of Colorado history.

Is your library seeking funding for a digital initiative, such as digitizing historic newspapers? Consider applying for a SIPA micro-grant. Applications are due 1/19/18.

CSL Share & Learn Greeley

Join consultants from the State Library at the Farr Regional Library in Greeley on December 8 for CSL Share & Learn, a free event that combines hands-on professional development with time for sharing with colleagues. Learn more and register.

Children & Teen Programs

Voting is open Dec 1 – Dec 31 for One Book 4 Colorado. Spread the word! Anyone can vote on the book that will be given to all Colorado 4-year-olds in April.

Encourage teens at your library to enter the 2017 Teen Video Challenge, sponsored by the Collaborative Summer Learning Program. This year’s theme is music. Contest deadline is Feb 28; winners will be announced in April 2018.
