One Book 4 Colorado

Thank you to all the libraries, sponsors, and partners who helped make the launch of One Book 4 Colorado a success! On Tuesday, April 10, dozens of preschoolers gathered at the State Capitol to hear Gov. John Hickenlooper and Lt. Gov. Donna Lynne read the winning title, Groovy Joe: Dance Party Countdown by Eric Litwin.

Many libraries are offering special OB4CO programs during the book giveaway period, April 9-23. For example, Poudre River Public Library District is celebrating with a Disco Party at Old Town Library, April 14 from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. Families are invited to join special guests Senator John Kefalas and Representative Joann Ginal, who will read this year’s winning title.

Pick ‘n’ Mix

Pueblo-area activist Juan “Freddie Freak” Trujillo will speak about the history of the Chicano Movement, May 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Carnegie Public Library in Trinidad.

Blue Sonnet Jazz will perform a concert of torch songs at Bemis Public Library, April 14 at 2:00 pm. The duo consists of singer-songwriter & jazz pianist Elea Plotkin with vocalist Karen Banning.

This past week, staff from Golden Public Library stopped by Arthur Lakes Library at Colorado School of Mines to get students signed up for their JeffCo Library cards. What a fantastic partnership!

Fun for Kids & Teens

Montrose Regional Library District is offering special Earth Day STREAM programming, Down in the Dirt Adventures, this Saturday, April 14. During the 10:00 am STREAM Jr. program, staff from the Montrose Botanic Gardens will teach kids ages 4-7 about soil stew and worm hotels. At 12:00 pm, kids ages 8-13 will learn about soil samples, gardening, composting, and worms. Registration is required.

Windsor-Severance Library is also combining STEAM and gardening in their program Make it Happen: Green and Growing, April 14 from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. Kids ages 6-9 will build terrariums. Registration required.

Boulder Public Library announced the three winners of their annual Kids’ Library Card Art Contest, chosen from a record 285 entries. BPL library cards will begin featuring the designs on May 30. Learn more and see the designs.

Jefferson County Public Library is throwing an Anime Prom for teens, April 14 at Standley Lake Library. Teens are encouraged to bring some friends and come dressed as their favorite anime characters. Register online.

Bud Werner Memorial Library invites kids ages 8 and up to Chess for Kids at the Library, led by local chess enthusiast and instructor, Wyatt Wilson. The class meets every Saturday from 9:15 to 10:15 am.

Libraries in the News

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs Communique reports that the Kraemer Family Library has received the 2018 Will Eisner Graphic Novel Growth Grant, which the library will use to provide support for creative workshops and materials for veterans. Read the story.

Jeri B. Gilham, head of Youth Services and Outreach at Montrose Regional Library District, welcomed the library’s newest staff members, Sara Davis and Kacee Edingger, in a column published in the Montrose Daily Press: New MRLD youth services librarians.
