Books in the Wild

Inspired by the mission of the Free Little Library movement, the Clear Creek County Library District  has partnered with Loveland Ski Area to promote literacy and the love of reading through three Free Little Libraries, built by Library Staff and volunteers at the base of both lodges at the Loveland Ski Area, and the on-mountain Ptarmigan Roost Cafe. Loveland Ski Area is the first ski area to provide this amenity, and the Free Little Library at the Ptarmigan Roost Cate is believed to be the highest elevated Free Little Library at 12,050’ above sea level! Or, join Vail Public Library’s Skiing Book Club on March 8 from 11:00am – 1:30pm. Participants meet in the area between the water fountain near Bistro 14 and Gondoly’s Pizza at the top of Eagle’s Nest Gondola to discuss books and then ski!

Seeds of Spring

Get a jump on spring with Anythink Libraries’ Dig It: Seed Bombs event. Make wildflower seed bombs that will produce a lovely bouquet in your yard or home. Enjoy coffee and snacks as you create your own wildflower starter kit at Anythink Bennet Library on March 2, from 10:30am-12:00 pm. Registration required.

Adults and supervised children under 12 are invited to join the Boulder Public Library and the BeeChicas on March 13 from 4:00pm – 5:00pm to learn How to bee a guerilla gardener. Registration is required, so visit the event page to sign up today.

Join the Pine River Library and the Pine River Garden Club for a Seed Exchange and Workshop Day on March 30 from 10:00am -2:00pm. Bring your extra seeds to trade enjoy garden stories, advice, and of course seeds. Please bring small containers to transport any seeds you may want.

• 10:00am: Presentation on gardening in the community garden this season, and the Club’s new “Shared Harvest” Plan.
• 11:00am: Optional seed starting workshop. Participants will get soil blocks, trays, and guidance to start new seeds. *This workshop is $10 for Garden Club Members and $15 for non-members.

The Basalt Library Seed Savers Club meets on March 9 from 10:30am – 12:00pm, for their Seed Saving Introduction and 2019 Participant Registration event. Become part of a growing local group of individuals who are committed to preserving the practice and benefits of seed saving. Libraries and Museums in the News

Last week a small group of parents calling themselves Pornography is Not Education (PINE) dropped their lawsuit against the Colorado Library Consortium (CLiC). The complaint, filed with Arapahoe County District Court in October 2018, was the result of a two-year campaign by the parents to censor and remove a variety of educational research products from schools and libraries across Colorado. Jim Duncan, Executive Director for CLiC, celebrated this news, but remarked: “Money and time spent on CLiC’s legal defense in this frivolous lawsuit could have been better used to support schools, libraries, and our communities. CLiC unifies libraries so that they deliver a valuable return on taxpayer investments… throughout our state’s many diverse regions, from rural to suburban to urban to mountain communities.” See the full press release here.

Check out the latest installment of “Museums Matter,” a series of three articles in the Vail Daily compiled by Jennifer Mason, the executive director of the Colorado Snowsports Museum. Mason discusses the importance of museums as places of authenticity, where individuals can view and interact with objects firsthand, rather than electronically, or in the pages of a book.

The Ouray News reports on Library of Congress efforts to preserve Ouray’s colorful local history through photos and documents. To access the preserved history of Ouray County go to the Library of Congress website at loc.gov and do a search for “Ouray County.”

A new Armistice Day memorial exhibit comes to the Lucretia Vaile Museum in Palmer Lake in time for the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day and the Treaty of Versailles. Read the full Tribune piece here.
