Learning Edge October #1

Fall has arrived and as quite typical for Colorado in October there is a forecast for snow this week in many parts of the state.  Make sure your car is prepared for winter travel! October is also honored to hold a number of national awareness events, including Digital Citizenship Month, Bullying Prevention Month, Dyslexia Awareness Month, and Cybersecurity Awareness Month. These are highlighted in the sections below. If you need more events to focus on, check out the Trivia Corner at the bottom of the page.

DigCit Week Oct 14-18

Amplify your students’ voices and give them ownership of their digital lives –

Peruse the video discussion activities developed by Common Sense Media at CS Activities.  “Add a daily dose of digital citizenship to your week with the Digital Citizens (they’re a band!). These fun characters help young students learn about healthy media habits.”  There are video activities for all ages.


ISTE Announces Coalition for DigCitCommit Educator Challenge

The Digital Citizenship Commitment campaign (DigCitCommit) has been launched with the goal of redefining digital citizenship and reaching 1 million students by 2021. The campaign will engage educators, allow for the sharing of best practices and provide them with the tools to teach a new definition of digital citizenship and well-being. Digital Citizenship Commitment Virtual Congress

The DigCitCommit coalition also announced the first Digital Citizenship Commitment Virtual Congress Feb. 11-12, 2020. The free virtual event will showcase educators and students who demonstrate effective digital citizenship based on the five competencies. Programming and registration will launch in tandem with the coalition’s celebration of Digital Citizenship Week in October.

Student Podcasting

The Student Podcast PODCAST, at Listenwise, founded by Monica Brady-Myerov, is a podcast featuring great student podcasts!  Each week the PODCAST highlights students’ work and includes teachers’ challenges and successes of podcasting with their students. “We believe elevating students’ voices beyond the classroom and sharing the lesson process will inspire others to get podcasting with their classes!”  You can subscribe to the show on iTunes or Spotify.

Online bullying has real-world consequences, and young software engineer Trisha Prabhu saw a way to help by inventing a tool called ReThink that asks people, before they send a hurtful message, if they really want to say that. READAct Conference

The 5th Annual READAct conference is designed to support the implementation of evidence-based reading instruction. The focus will be on direct and explicit instruction for all students including English learners, emerging readers, and struggling readers. The conference will be held in Grand Junction on Thursday and Friday, October 10th and 11th, 2019.  You can register at READAct Conference. I hope to see you there!


Free Arduino Workshop at Widefield SD

Coding in Action is an after school coding club that culminates with a competition, serving grades 3-5.  Widefield School District 3 is hosting a FREE Arduino workshop on December 7, 2019, from 8 am to 12 pm to help coaches and teams get ready for the competition. Coaches can attend alone or they can bring their teams. Attendees will learn how to set up and program LED lights and RGB LED lights with an Arduino board.  More information and registration at Coding in Action.

OpenSciEd NGSS Middle School Units

OpenSciEd was launched to improve the supply of and address the demand for high-quality, open-source, full-course science instructional materials. In this recording, Jim Ryan, Executive Director of OpenSciEd, shares a one-hour introduction to the OpenSciEd organization and the newly-released units. He discusses the publicly available materials themselves, the OpenSciEd project and development process, and a timeline for releasing a full middle school program. National Bullying Prevention Month

Since 2006, schools and organizations across the country have joined in observing National Bullying Prevention Month in October. The goal is to encourage schools, communities & organizations to work together to stop bullying including cyberbullying.  Resources for educators, students, parents, and the community can be found at STOMP Out Bullying ™, Stop Bullying.Gov , Pacer’s National Bullying Prevention.
