Cons & Fests

Set aside October 12 for a day of cosplay and fandom at Mesa County Libraries Comic Con, happening from 9:00am to 5:00 pm. at Two Rivers Convention Center in downtown Grand Junction. Admission is free with a Mesa County Libraries card, or a $5 donation. (Need a library card? Apply for one online at no charge, or visit one of the library’s eight convenient locations!)

Celebrate the autumn film festival circuit with Aurora Public Library’s Short Film Festival on October 26 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. The lineup will feature a variety of short films for you to enjoy – or critique. Stay for a few or stay for them all. Engage in lively discussion (between films, please), cast a vote for your favorite – and don’t forget to grab some popcorn!

Join Boulder Public Library on September 28 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm for the Bee Boulder Family Festival. Enjoy pollinator-themed education, live music with Jeff & Paige, hands-on activities, face painting, prizes and fun.  This event takes place in Central Park between the Glen Huntington Bandshell and Boulder Farmer’s Market, 1236 Canyon Blvd, Boulder, CO 80302.

Pick ‘n’ Mix

What goes into producing a local newspaper? Get a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the inner workings of the Gunnison Country Times on October 2 at 7:00 pm during Gunnison Library’s program Demystifying the Media with Editor Chris Dickey. Learn how you can play a role in influencing what gets reported, and what doesn’t, in your hometown newspaper.

Ignacio Community Library hosts Durango-based short filmmaker Sean Owen for a screening of his award winning documentary Tribal Radio! On September 28 at 11:00 am. The film tells the story of the Southern Ute Indian staff members who established KSUT-FM (based in Ignacio), one of the first tribal radio stations in the U.S.

There are many myths and misconceptions when it comes to home gardening. Join Poudre River Public Library District at 12:30 on October 2 for Gardening Myths and Mysteries: Learn the Truth! to learn about separating fact from fiction. Master Gardener Roger Heins will cover dozens of myths, such as using bananas to add potassium to the soil and the truth about coffee grounds.

All ages are invited to participate in Security Public Library’s Annual Short Story Contest.  Use the image below as a prompt for a short story numbering 1500 words or less and enter for a chance to win a Barnes & Noble gift card. Helping Hands

Come by yourself or with your team to Broomfield Library’s inventHQ makerspace inaugural Design Sprint! Design and produce innovative solutions for communities and individuals with disabilities. Get a chance to use manufacturing and design techniques to give back. Prizes and food included! At this two day event (October 4 from 5:00-8:00 pm & October 5 from 9:00am to 5:00 pm), map, sketch, design, prototype, and test solutions that might be able to ease pain points that many people with disabilities may have in their lives.

Garfield County Libraries offers Dental Health Clinics with treatment provided by licensed dentists from Dental HouseCalls on September 28 (Glenwood Springs Branch) and September 30 (Rifle Branch) from 11:00am – 5:00 pm. Treatments are individualized and can include diagnostic and preventative care, extractions and restorative treatment, dentures, and relines. Services provided free to Medicaid patients and those who qualify. Make an appointment by calling 801-310-5536. Walk-ins accepted based on time availability.

Need a helping hand with medicaid, food assistance, or child care? Staff from Human Services will be at the Pitkin County Library every 2nd Tuesday of the month from 4:30-5:30 pm to answer questions.  No appointment needed.
