Civic Engagement

Join Mesa County Libraries on September 12 at 4:30 for Fruita for Equality – Start the Conversation, an open-house community discussion on the topic of equality, race, and prejudice within our community. Listen to stories from your neighbors, share ideas about change, and get involved! This event is for all ages! Drop in and share your story! This community engagement event is part of a larger series where the community will come together to read and discuss.

Police have become our society’s main resource to navigate conflict or crisis in the community. Recent events have once again called on us to re-examine the role of policing in addressing conflict with neighbors and concerns in the community. How can we move towards using alternatives to police? How does that fit into a larger vision of transforming safety? Join Denver Public Library and panelists for a facilitated dialogue about community, safety and Alternatives to Calling the Police on September 15 from 4:00-5:00 pm.

Longmont Museum hosts Voices of Change: A History of Race & Social Justice in Longmont on September 17 at 7:30 pm. Local civic leaders and activists gather to share their perspectives on Longmont’s history of race relations and the ongoing efforts to create a more just, equitable, and inclusive community for the many diverse people who call Longmont home. Participate in a panel discussion about how Boulder Public Library can better serve teens and meet members from the Boulder Library’s Teen Advisory Board (BTAB), the Library Commission, and the Boulder Library Foundation in the first annual Teen Summit on September 12 from 4:00-6:30 pm.  Meredith Russo, the author of the award-winning novel, If I Was Your Girl, will be kicking off our event with a discussion and Q&A. Bud Werner Memorial Library invites you to spend an evening with Nancy Pearl, a.k.a.  America’s Librarian on September 15 at 7:00 pm, as she shares her new book, The Writer’s Library: The Authors You Love on the Books That Changed Their Lives, an intimate, moving, and insightful collection from  Nancy Pearl and noted playwright Jeff Schwager that celebrates the power of literature and reading to connect us all. Arapahoe Libraries hosts author Kali Fajardo-Anstine on September 17 at 6:00 pm for a discussion of her collection of mesmerizing stories, Sabrina & Corina. In writing about the lives of Latina women of Indigenous ancestry, the author shows us portraits of unrelenting female power. This stunning debut is a powerful meditation on friendship, mothers and daughters, and the deep-rooted truths of our homelands. After the presentation stick around for a Q&A.

Aurora Public Library, in collaboration with Jefferson County Public Library, are proud to present Ben Guterson, award-winning author of Winterhouse. Join the libraries in meeting the author virtually with Special Young Readers Book Club – Author Visit with Ben Guterson on September 28 from 5:00-6:00 pm.

Join Pikes Peak Library District  for the 2020 Mountain of Authors keynote address by bestselling author Barbara O’Neal on September 12 at 1:00 pm. Barbara O’Neal (also writing under the name of Barbara Samuel) is the author of more than a dozen titles, including The Art of Inheriting Secrets, How to Bake a Perfect Life, and When We Believed in Mermaids. She lives in Colorado Springs with her partner, a British endurance athlete, and their small zoo of rescue animals.Barbara will speak for approximately 45 minutes, and then open it up to a question and answer session. Developing a Digital Inclusion Response to COVID-19 | September 17 @ 12:00 pm
As COVID-19 has exacerbated the digital divide for vulnerable communities, the need to jointly address access to internet, devices, digital literacy training, and other barriers to digital participation has become critical.This facilitated workshop is designed for leadership in state and local government, schools, nonprofit and community organizations, companies, libraries, and other organizations that provide or have the capability to provide internet, device, or digital literacy training solutions.

Pat Wagner of Pattern Research will offer a free Everyday Library Leadership webinar series on September 21 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm MDT. Sessions include:

Grants Enhance Rural Communities in Targeted States
The Laura Jane Musser Fund encourages collaborative and participatory efforts among citizens in communities in Colorado, Hawaii, Minnesota, and Wyoming, as well as parts of New York and Texas.

Youth Organizations in Company Communities in the U.S. and Canada Funded
The Nordstrom Corporate Giving Program supports nonprofit organizations in the communities where company stores are located, including locations in the U.S. and Canada.

Don’t forget to fill out your State Grants to Libraries eligibility form on or before September 15. The guidelines and eligibility forms are now posted on the State Grants to Libraries website at http://www.cde.state.co.us/cdelib/stategrants.

In November Colorado voters will consider the Colorado Gallagher Amendment Repeal and Property Tax Assessment Rates Measure, which would repeal the amendment passed in 1982. Many entities would benefit from the Gallagher Amendment’s repeal, including Mesa County Libraries.

Animator, CMU professor takes role as library’s artist in residence | The Daily Sentinel
Evan Curtis came to the Grand Valley as an assistant professor of animation and digital filmmaking at Colorado Mesa University. Fortunately, for those who aren’t in his classes, Curtis is Mesa County Library’s latest 970West artist in residence where he will offer workshops in stop motion animation and Foley sound design.
