Celebrating Community

Pikes Peak Library District is hosting a variety of events celebrating culture, diversity, multiculturalism, immigration, and resiliency, in connection with the All Pikes Peak Reads 2018. One highlight will be a visit from ALA President Loida Garcia-Febo on October 5, 4:30-8:00 pm, at Sand Creek Library.

Lamar Public Library invites you to their Library Carnival, September 28 at 10:00 am. Enjoy a day of games, prizes, face painting, and more!

The 2018 Fort Collins Book Festival returns on October 19 & 20 with the theme The Big Think. This free, two-day event will feature more than 35 authors and 40+ sessions including writing workshops, presentations, readings, panel discussions, and much more. Former Colorado Governor Bill Ritter Jr. will deliver the opening keynote. The festival is produced through a partnership between Poudre River Public Library District, CSU’s Morgan Library, and numerous community supporters.

Bud Werner Library presents One Book Steamboat, an annual community read event enhanced with accompanying programs. This year’s title is Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. Visit the One Book Steamboat site for a listing of events throughout October, including documentary screenings and book discussions.

One Book One Broomfield and the Broomfield Depot Museum invite residents to record their oral histories for the “You Are Broomfield” project. Each recording will be preserved in the Depot Museum archives and every participant will receive a free copy. Interviews can be scheduled every Wednesday in September and October from 3:00 to 7:00 pm. Register online.

Creating at the Library

Mesa County Libraries is seeking applicants for their Artist in Residence program, a 14-week residency that includes studio space, a stipend, and opportunities for community engagement. Visual artists, musicians, and writers are welcome to apply by October 8.

Kids ages 8-12 are invited to Drop In Scratch Computer Coding at Basalt Regional Library, Thursdays from 4:00 to 6:00 pm beginning October 11. Scratch is a software program that teaches coding through creativity, reasoning, and collaboration.

Delta County Libraries invites teens to learn about stop-motion animation on September 21 at 4:00 pm. Participants will use objects like LEGO and clay to create short films.

Going Fine Free

Denver Public Library has proposed going fine free in 2019. The plan goes to the City Council and Denver Public Library Commission for approval this fall.

Basalt Regional Library recently launched a pilot program to remove fines for youth and young adults.

Pick ‘n Mix

Join Montrose Regional Library and Backyard Wilderness for a nature walk at the Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park, Sept. 29 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Bring a camera or a smartphone to take pics. Registration is required.

Take a Social Media Crash Course at Bemis Library, Sept. 24 at 9:30 am. Learn how to navigate three popular sites: Pinterest, Reddit, and YouTube. Registration is required.

Arapahoe Libraries presents an afternoon with Laurie Halse Anderson, author of Speak, Sept. 29 at Smoky Hill Library. Join her for an author talk from 2:00 to 3:00 pm and a book signing from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. Registration is required.

If you like your movies with a side of cheese, check out Berthoud Community Library’s new “So Bad It’s Good!” movie night. The inaugural event is September 21 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Note: movies may not be suitable for children under 13.

The Friends of Wray Public Library have put together bags to welcome new community members, with goodies donated by local businesses. If you’re new to Wray, stop by the library to pick up your welcome bag!

Inform yourself about Colorado Midterm Elections! Tomlinson Library at Colorado Mesa University will be hosting a Midterm Election Literacy panel on Thursday, Sept. 27 from 7-8:30 pm in the Library Event Space (L-139). Know where to go for real facts and information about the candidates and their stance on important policy issues before you vote on November 6. Panelists will be from School District 51, The Western Colorado Alliance, Colorado Mesa University and the community.
