Strengthening Communities

Every Saturday at 10:00 am, Westminster Public Library’s Irving Street Branch offers Citizenship Preparation Classes, where participants discuss and practice both written test questions and oral interview questions. Classes are open to all those interested in finding out more about the citizenship process, not just those practicing for the test.

Celebrate the reopening of Hot Sulphur Springs Library with a day of prizes, snacks, and fun, February 28 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. The library has been closed since early January 2018 to repair water damage.

As part of their annual community tradition, Bud Werner Memorial Library will head outdoors with other residents of the Yampa Valley to create a landscape-scale snow design. The 2018 design theme is Snow Stitching in Nature. Participants will meet at Carpenter Ranch meadow on March 4 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

Ruby M. Sisson Memorial Library recently started partnering with Archuleta Seniors, Inc., their local senior center, to send out library materials to their homebound clients along with their Meals on Wheels deliveries. Patrons receive a customized selection of books, audiobooks, DVDs, and magazines in special bags (see photo). The library plans to expand this program to other community organizations that serve homebound patrons. Thanks to Meg Wempe for sharing this program!

Pick ‘n’ Mix

Historical entertainer Caryl Harvey will perform as the legendary Margaret “Molly” Brown on February 17 at Lamar Public Library. The audience will accompany Ms. Brown on a journey that includes New York’s immigrant community in the 19th century, the sinking of the Titanic, and the Ludlow Massacre.

The Carnegie Library of Trinidad’s most popular program, Chocolate Night, has been rescheduled to February 24 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Lauren Gockley and the staff of Coda Signature will demonstrate how to make chocolate, with plenty of tasting opportunities. This event is free; no registration required.

Mancos Public Library’s Teen Tech Week will help teens prepare for the Zombie Apocalypse! Teens will build their own survival tools and learn skills that will help them in the event of zombies (or any disaster/emergency situation). The event happens over two days, March 9 and 10, from 3:30 to 9:00 pm. Interested teens should sign up at the front desk. Thanks to Jenni Kitchen for sharing this event!

It’s official! Governor Hickenlooper has proclaimed February 16, 2018 as Colorado Digital Learning Day. The national Digital Learning Day is February, 22nd. Post your digital learning events on the national website http://www.digitallearningday.org/about-dlday.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel published an in-depth piece on how Mesa County Libraries is addressing homelessness with an open-doors policy.

The Longmont Observer reported that Judith Anderson, director of the Longmont Public Library, is retiring on March 30. Judith began working at the library in 1989 and later became its director in 2008. Read the full story.
