Mr. Wixard’s Water Cooler

We are closing in on the end of October and snow has flown a few times! Make sure you are ready for colder weather and read up on winter travel preparation at CDOT Winter Weather Driving. Even if you are working remotely and not driving as much, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared.

Last week, was Digital Citizenship Week!  Although this is a “week” celebration, I am a firm believer that integrating digital citizenship opportunities and discussions for students is necessary throughout the year. There are a plethora of resources for you – visit my earlier post at Learning Digital Citizenship for ideas, activities, and resources to develop digital citizenship  If you have more resources to share with the learning community, please send them to me via DigCit Resources.  I will be sure to add it!

Flipgrid and Canvas Integration  Using the Canvas Learning Management platform? Flipgrid has collaborated with Canvas to connect the two platforms and make it easier for educators to share Flipgrid directly with their Canvas students. Read more about how to do this at Flipgrid Support

Flipgrid Discovery Library With over 25,000 topics, you can find ideas, inspiration and ready-to-use discussion prompts! Watch the video below and visit the Flipgrid blog at Find Inspiration.  In your Flipgrid account, click on the Discovery tab to locate the Topic of the Day, Wonder of the Day, and partners such as the MET, Wonderopolis, Minecraft, and many more! I can get lost on this site!

CSV Domain Upload  You can now upload a CSV file of all the domains you’d like to have access to your Topic.

National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Grant

The National Endowment for the Arts, in collaboration with Arts Midwest, is taking applications for grants for NEA Big Read project between September 2021 and June 2022. NEA Big Read program is a community-wide read of one of a selection of titles, book discussions, and local book-inspired events. The deadline for grant applications is January 27, 2021. Bookmarks Series Netflix

ALSC partnered with Netflix in support of Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices, a collection of 12 episodes featuring prominent Black celebrities and artists reading children’s books from Black authors. Visit Bookmarks to view the episodes and to access links to additional resources. Videos are also available for free without a subscription on the Netflix Jr. YouTube page.


Digital Literacy  

Learn how to help your students be digital literacy masters in this virtual event “Here, There, and Everywhere” put on by TCEA, MACUL, and other ed-tech organizations. The Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest for students grades 6-12, is taking applications to win part of a prize valued at $2 million in technology and supplies. CDE Educator Training

CDE K-3 Reading Training

Just a reminder from the last newsletter – Colorado school districts are required to ensure all Kindergarten through 3rd-grade teachers complete evidence-based training in teaching reading by the 2021-22 school year. CDE is offering training options to meet this requirement. Visit CDE READING for more information.
