The Learning Edge

September 2020 #2

Yes, the Bitmoji craze captured me over the summer!

Did you know it is National Self-Care month? As I mentioned in the last issue, self-care as an educator is more important than ever!  Seriously consider ways to take care of yourself.  Below are some resources for you to peruse. Don’t forget that we have access to the State Employee Assistance Program, CSEAP site for webinars, support, and counselor contacts. Check out the Colorado Coronavirus Pandemic and Emotional Wellness resources too!

Kelly Hopkinson in her Learn to Shine Bright TED Talk in 2018, emphasizes the importance of educator self-care. “Start a journal, Tell yourself you are enough, drink water, exercise, try yoga, practice random acts of kindness, ask for support.” She asks “Why bother doing all these things?” “Because YOU are Exquisite!” You’re light needs protecting!”  Need a reminder? Send yourself a future letter of encouragement – check out Future Me.

I’ve been a singer all my life (my idea of self-care) and it is good to know that the health benefits of singing are well documented!

  • Singing improves your mood
  • Singing is an effective stress reliever & improves sleep
  • Singing releases pain-relieving endorphins
  • Singing improves posture
  • Singing increases lung capacity

Singing will make you feel like a rockstar!

Listen to these Chino Valley students’ virtual performance of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Such talent! Second time around sing along with them. I couldn’t help but sing along!
