Charting a Course for Success: America’s Strategy for STEM Education
The White House released Charting a Course for Success: America’s Strategy for STEM Education, a strategic plan developed with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the National Science and Technology Council Committee on STEM Education. The five-year strategic plan seeks to ensure all Americans have access to quality education in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Goals include building a strong foundation of STEM literacy, increasing diversity in STEM, and preparing the STEM workforce of the future. More information and highlights at NSTA Blog.

English Learner Educator Training Requirement
From the last newsletter – New State Board rules require elementary math, science, social studies, and English language arts teachers to complete Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education training:
- Within their next five-year license renewal period (For example, teachers holding a professional license that expires in September 2018 would need to meet the requirements by September 2023.
- Only once over the course of their professional licensure as a teacher in Colorado. For additional information visit PD Requirements.

Reminders on Photos & Videos Under FERPA
The U.S. Department of Education FAQ’s on Photos and Videos Under FERPA provides guidance and examples of situations in which photos and videos would be considered FERPA-protected education records (the same principles would apply for audio recordings). The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has also issued Guidance on COPPA and Voice Recordings which you might find helpful with any student-related recordings.
Driving K-12 Innovation
CoSN has revealed their innovation survey’s top five hurdles, accelerators, and technology enablers in K-12 education.
- Participants engaged in a six-month discussion about emerging technologies as part of CoSN’s Driving K-12 Innovation initiative.
- CoSN will produce (early 2019) a series of three publications focusing on each topic. and a new toolkit delivering practical tips for schools leaders to spark discussions and action around the findings.
- CoSN is seeking examples of pilots, projects, and programs from CoSN members that embody the top 5 Accelerators, tech enablers, and hurdles solutions identified by our Driving K-12 Innovation Advisory Board. Colorado-based Sphero Discontinues BB-8s and More
Announced yesterday in The Verge – Sphero will not be producing any more BB-8s, R2-D2s, Lightning McQueen cars, or talking Spider-Mans. However, Sphero has promised to offer app support for “at least two years.” Read additional information at The Verge.
