Native American Heritage Month
From Mesa Verde to the high plains, learn the stories of the original inhabitants of Colorado at a virtual presentation of Native Americans of Colorado with Buena Vista Public Library on November 17 from 1:00-2:00 pm. Active Minds, a provider of professional lectures, traces the civilizations of the Ute, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Pueblo and other tribes in order to understand Colorado’s Native American history and legacy.
Adults 18 and over are invited to join Pikes Peak Library District on November 6 at 1:00 pm for Untold Stories from Native America. Native American storyteller Sebrena Forrest will share more about Native American culture and perform tales from indigenous cultures to educate and entertain as part of National Native American Heritage Month.
Dreamcatchers originated from the Native American Ojibwa tribes. It is believed that they were used to ward off and catch nightmares. Join Poudre River Public Library District for a virtual Dreamcatchers Makerspace with Alejandro Cázares on November 13 from 10:00-11:30 am, where you will learn how to make a dreamcatcher, its origin, symbolism and its journey to Mexico where they are representative of various Indigenous groups.
Denver Public Library is recognizing Indigenous People’s Heritage Month with an online panel discussing the film Gather, which follows the stories of natives on the frontlines of a growing movement to reconnect with spiritual and cultural identities that were devastated by genocide. Join Gather cast members Twila Cassadore and Nephi Craig in a conversation about the film (available for free with a Denver Public Library card on Kanopy) on November 10, 5:30-7:30 pm.
Back to Baking
Join Douglas County Libraries on November 12 at 6:30 for an Evening with DoughEyed Blogger/Author Nicole Hampton, author of Sugar High: Sweet & Savory Baking in your High Altitude Kitchen. Hampton will discuss her new cookbook: High Altitude Breakfast: Sweet and Savory Baking at 5000 feet and above. Her books will be on sale at the event. Registration Required.
Have you struggled with baking at 5000 feet? High Plains Library District invites you to Elevation Baking on October 30 from 2:00-3:00 pm, with Sheila Beckley, Weld County CSU Extension Agent for an in-person class and learn all about baking at high elevations.
Play & Learn
Join Wilkinson Public Library on October 26 from 5:00-7:00 pm for Fly Tying with Ryan Hoglung. In this detailed class you’ll learn to tie a specific fly each time! All supplies & equipment provided- come ready to learn, create a fly fishing community together, and get hands-on. Convene in the Telluride Room around the giant live-edge oaken table, where your fly tying vise & supplies will be all ready for you. Please pre-register here!
Garfield County Libraries is partnering with LaMedici for workshops to help develop the habit of savings. Join them on October 27 at 4:30 pm for Building Your Piggy Bank, a fun bilingual workshop designed for young children to build and decorate a piggy bank as they learn basic concepts about money, and talk about the value of money, things, and people.
Not everyone on our planet lives with the same constraints and water issues as we do here in Colorado. Do we have enough of this precious resource to go around for everyone? Join Boulder Public Library on October 24 at 1:00 for Hands on Science: A World of Water, a fun hour of learning about the many demands for water across the globe.
It’s spooky season! Join Anythink Libraries for Paranormal Investigation 101 on October 23 from 3:00-4:00 pm. Richard Estep from the Boulder County Paranormal Research Society will walk you through how to perform an effective paranormal investigation. Space is limited; registration encouraged. Gameschooling: Using Board Games in the Classroom (Indiana State Library) | October 27 @ 9:00 am MT
Board games are fun for children of all ages, but they are also promising tools for education. How can we best practically incorporate them into K-12 classrooms in order to optimize learning? Presenter Catherine Croft has experimented with the integration of board games as educational tools. She will discuss best practices for using board games effectively to teach science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects. Topics covered will include gamer motivations, fun yet educational game mechanics, lesson plan structures, roles of educators in scaffolded learning, and common mistakes discovered in the “gameschooling” process.
