Halloween Fun

Looking to put the final touches on your Halloween costume? Join the Costume Hack-a-thon at the Bldg61 Makerspace at Boulder Public Library, October 27 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. Use the sewing machines, laser cutters, glue guns, and more to take your costume to the next level. Register online.

Join the Spooktacular Parade at Louisville Public Library! Bring your little goblins ages 1-6 to the library on October 26 from 2:00 to 2:30 to take part in the parade followed by crafts, storytime, and trick-or-treat.

Anderson Academic Commons at the University of Denver is hosting a Harry Potter-themed Halloween party, October 30 at 7:00 pm. DU students are invited to wear their costumes and participate in the Troll in the Library scavenger hunt, play games, and have some fun treats. Register online.

Kids, Teens, & Parents

Rocky Mountain PBS and Douglas County Libraries invite 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students to submit short stories that capture a Colorado “sense of place” to their StoryMakers contest. Entries must be received by November 22, and some winners will be invited to attend an all-day writers workshop and RMPBS station tour. Learn more.

High Plains Library District and The American Society of Civil Engineers have collaborated to present: Ready, Set, Create!, an interactive program series for children in grades 2-5. Kids (and their parents) will learn ways to engineer structures that can withstand the forces of nature. Registration required.

Broomfield Library will host Building Cooperative Behavior, presented by Dr. Jeff Kupfer of Imagine!, on Thursday, October 26 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. Parents and caregivers will learn to recognize and understand principles of behavior, distinguish between proactive and reactive methods, and draw on cooperative behavior building methods to strengthen positive behaviors and weaken negative ones. Spotlight on JeffCo

You’re invited to the Columbine Library grand re-opening on October 21 from 9:00 to 5:00. Staff members will be on hand to issue library cards and introduce new patrons to the library’s resources.

Jefferson County Public Library continues its phone-In program with a four-part series on Medicare, offered in partnership with the U.S. Health and Human Services Department. Participants may attend any or all the sessions either by calling 303-502-5189 or by joining online (headset required).

Expand Your Mind

Bud Werner Memorial Library will host Yoga Talk: An evening with Swami Mahesh, Friday, October 27 at 6:30 pm. The yogi will speak on “Tantra Yoga: The Path to Self-Actualization.”

American philosopher Martha Nussbaum will deliver two lectures at Colorado State University on November 10 in the Lory Student Center Theater. She will speak on Aging, Stigma, and Disgust at 2:00 pm and then on Anger, Powerlessness, and the Politics of Blame at 5:00 pm. Both talks are free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Artists in the Elizabeth area are invited to the Artist Social, hosted at the Elizabeth Public Library on November 4 from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. Enjoy coffee and donuts while you meet other artists and creative types in your community.

The Durango Herald reported that Durango Public Library recently purchased English language learning materials with State Grants to Libraries funds.

The Westword published a story about Colorado libraries—including Anythink, Denver Public Library, and Aurora Public Library—that are growing their collections of cannabis-related resources and offering programs related to the cannabis industry.
