Challenge Accepted

This winter, Summit County Library is making reading more fun with Yeti…Set…Read! All Ages Winter Reading Challenge. Starting Monday, November 1, you are invited to register on the library’s Beanstack app or website to participate in a winter reading challenge where you will earn a free book of your choice as a prize just for registering! Read or listen to a variety of genre categories to complete virtual Beanstack badges. Don’t know any books in specific categories? Don’t worry, they’ve created some lists to help.

Delta County Libraries presents an all ages Thankful Coloring Contest during the month of November. The age categories are 0-4, 5-8, 9-12, teens, and adults.  Coloring pages can be picked up at any library in Delta County during open hours beginning November 2 through November 30.  Submissions must be received by 6:00pm on December 1st.  Winners will be announced on Wednesday, December 4.

There’s Snow Better Time to Read with Lamar Public Library’s 2021 Winter Reading Challenge, from November 20 to February 1. Log your winter reading and help reach the Community Goal of 200,000 pages! Finish challenges and come in for a prize from the treasure chest at the library. Adults who don’t want something from the treasure chest can instead enter a drawing for a gift certificate!

History & Heritage

Join the Louisville Public Library on November 14 from 10:00-11:00 am for Louisvill During the Great War.  The library is partnering with the Museum and Open Space for a walking tour of the industries that shaped Louisville’s wartime culture and economy. The Great War of 1914-1918 changed the world.  Learn how this conflict affected people, coal, agriculture, and mining in Boulder County and the Louisville area. Join the City’s Ranger Naturalist and Louisville Historical Museum staff for a walking tour of traces from the industries that fueled Louisville’s contributions to the war effort. This tour will leave from the Kerr Gardens. Advance registration required.

With the building of railroads, in the early 1800’s in the northern states, people could travel faster and easier than they had by wagon and horseback. On November 16 at 1:00 pm, Denver Public Library’s presentation of Railroads Across America – How They Impacted our Ancestors’ Lives will provide a general outline and timeline so that researchers will be able to see how their ancestors traveled. Railroads facilitated the movement of people and their goods.

Creative Outlets

Design and print your own holiday cards and wrapping paper with Dolores Public Library’s Linocut Blockprinting Workshop with Bryan Kyle on December 4 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Linocut is a printmaking technique where the design is cut into linoleum. Bring a design of your choice or draw your own at the workshop. All supplies are provided. Call the Dolores Public Library at 970-882-4127 to register. Space is limited. Appropriate opportunities will be provided for all ages.

How do we express ourselves through what we wear? Join Arapahoe Libraries to learn about the colorful world of Guatemala on November 13 from 2:00-3:00 pm through a Textiles Workshop with Museo de las Americas. Students will learn about the Maya, weaving, and how different people in Guatemala identify where they come from through design in their Huipils (tunic-like garments). Younger students will then create their own design out of fabric scraps. Older students get to test their motor skills and will learn how to weave. Geared toward children, but all are welcome.

Learning for All

Rekindling from Burnout: Lessons and Strategies for Public Library Workers  | November 18 @ 1:00 pm
Library workers provide support for patrons in distress on a regular basis. A hard and busy day might leave us depleted. Though we feel the effects of secondary trauma, we may not have the tools to describe and process the experience, leading to our own emotional distress. In this webinar we will discuss: Trauma exposure at the library and strategies & actions you can try at your library to build resiliency and networks of support.

Adults Need Play and How Libraries Can Help!  | November 18 @ 10:00 am
Did you know that play is as important for adults as it is for children? This interactive virtual program with Dr. Melissa Cast-Brede from UNO will demonstrate how play helps maintain adult brains, bodies, and spirits. Using the work of the National Institute of Play, we will explore the seven patterns of play.

Grants & Funding

National Endowment for the Arts Big Read
Bringing communities together around the shared activity of reading and discussing a book. The NEA Big Read aims to inspire conversation and discovery. Annually, the program supports approximately 75 dynamic community reading programs, each designed around a single NEA Big Read book. Arts Midwest accepts requests for proposals annually starting around mid-October with a deadline in late January. Applications are now being accepted for the 2022-23 Cycle.

American Rescue Plan: Humanities Grants for Libraries
Administered by the American Library Association, this grant is intended to deliver relief to libraries throughout the United States recovering from the coronavirus pandemic. The ALA will distribute up to 200 grants of $10,000 each, with an emphasis on reaching libraries in historically underserved and/or rural communities. The application deadline is December 2, 2021.
