Chamber Music

The Pitkin County Library is hosting Chamber Music in the Afternoon, a summer music series featuring student ensembles from the Aspen Music Festival and School.  Concerts take place from 4:00-6:00 pm in the Dunaway Community Room every Monday and Thursday starting Monday,  July 8 and ending Thursday, August 15.

Enjoy classical music from Music in the Mountains on the Pine River Library patio on July 11 from 6:00-8:00 pm! Featuring Russian Riot, a dynamic and charismatic Russian trio of festival favorites; these charming musicians have impressed Music in the Mountains festival-goers for many years.

Potter Time

Jefferson County Public Library hosts Harry Potter’s Birthday Celebration on July 31 from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm with Quidditch, costumes and cake! There will also be banners, trivia and a film fest, so be sure to dress in costume as you celebrate the “Boy Who Lived” during this end-of-summer party!

If you’re crazy about Harry Potter, then Mesa County Libraries’ Harry Potter Book + Movie Club is for you! They meet on the second Wednesday of the month (time varies, so be sure to check the schedule) to discuss each book in order, enjoy snacks, and create Harry Potter crafts. But that’s not all! Come back the following day to watch the Harry Potter movie of the same title.Next up: Harry potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on July 10 at 2:00 pm. Teens only, please!

Campers ages 7-11 are invited to join Douglas County Libraries for Camp DCL: Harry Potter Master LEGO® Engineering.  Kids will build Diagon Alley, explore Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, play Quidditch, challenge the serpentine Basilisk, and face the evil Voldemort. They’ll have so much fun they won’t realize they’re learning advanced STEM concepts in the process! Camp facilitated by professionals from Play-Well TEKnologies. **This event has an associated fee. Do you think you know everything there is to know about Harry Potter? Put your knowledge to the test! Clear Creek County Library District hosts Harry Potter Trivia throughout the month and all ages are welcome!

Grants and Funding Opportunities

The Colorado State Library is pleased to announce another year of State Grants to Libraries funding being available to libraries across the state! This year an additional $500,000 has been appropriated from the Colorado Legislature because of the demonstrated impact these funds provide to the communities the libraries serve. Each eligible library will receive a minimum of $1,000 more than in previous years. Projected funding amounts are available here (one grant awarded per library jurisdiction, academic institution, or school district). Eligibility forms are due Monday, September 16, 2019.

Grants Enhance Communities in Oklahoma and Colorado Springs
Inasmuch Foundation
The Inasmuch Foundation is dedicated to the betterment of people, neighborhoods, and communities in Oklahoma, but support is also considered for nonprofit organizations that address the Foundation’s priorities in Colorado Springs, CO. The Foundation’s areas of interest include education, community enhancement, and health and human services. Projects that involve collaborative community efforts to avoid duplication of services are encouraged. The upcoming deadline for letters of inquiry is August 15, 2019. Beyond Books

These days, we know that libraries are more than just a place to read and borrow books. Check out some of the cool stuff that libraries around the state are circulating in their communities!

Lamar Public Library has a pretty extensive Cake Pan Library. Cake pans can be borrowed for seven days and need to be hand washed before and after use. This is a great alternative to buying a pan that you may only use once!

Check out a Bike Repair Kit from Denver Public Library’s Library of Things. Bike Repair Kits provide the tools you need to fix a flat or make an adjustment to your bike. Checkout period: 2 hours. On-site at the library only.

High Plains Library District also offers a number of Specialty Checkouts, including circulating Power Meters. Power Check is an energy efficiency and education initiative provided in partnership with Xcel Energy. Check out a Power Check meter  and connect it to an appliance in your home to learn the appliance’s current, minimum, and maximum energy use.

Mesa County Libraries card holders are invited to Book a Librarian. Library staff are available by appointment for help with business, genealogy/local history, technology, or other research questions. Appointments are for 30 minutes and available at the Central Library in Grand Junction. To schedule, fill out this form.

Fort Morgan Public Library makes Chromebooks available for in-library use on a first come, first served basis.

And of course, the Colorado State Library, in partnership with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, facilitates the Check Out Colorado State Parks  program, which provides each participating library with two park passes inside nature backpacks to circulate, providing their patrons with an entire outdoor experience.

Education For All

NNLM presents Copyright, Fair Use and Creative Commons: Allies in Educational Settings on August 21 from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. In this session, you will be introduced to a practical framework for understanding what can be copyrighted and what can’t be with some typical scenarios librarians and educators encounter. You will also learn about where and in what context Fair Use applies, the different types of Creative Commons licenses, and how those licenses can help minimize copyright risk.

Kool107.9: Colorado Canyons Association and the  Museums of Western Colorado are team up to look for Mammoths, Sloths, and Dinosaurs in Western Colorado.

303 Magazine reports MCA TO SHOWCASE THREE WOMEN ARTISTS WITH COLORADO CONNECTIONS THIS FALL. On view from September 20, 2019 until April 5, 2020, these three exhibitions will explore different generations of women artists.

Durango Public Library sees high use, low financial support, reports the Durango Herald. More people use Durango Public Library than any other regional or resort library in Colorado, despite having fewer employees per 1,000 visitors and lower local revenue per capita, according to state records.

Highlands Ranch Herald: ‘Living history’ locomotive returns home after 12 years. The iconic Rio Grande Southern locomotive will return just in time for the Colorado Railroad Museum’s 60th anniversary celebration that runs July 12-14.
