The Friday Grab Bag is a weekly series that highlights fun, unique, and interesting happenings in Colorado libraries, and includes news from the Colorado State Library.

High Culture

Ever wanted to learn more about the legendary William Shakespeare? Beginning in August, Vail Public Library will host a 3-part series on Shakespeare for novices as well as aficionados called “Meet Will Shakespeare: An Introduction and Book Club – The Bard Doesn’t Have to be Hard!” The first event in this series will discuss Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing and will take place on Mon., Aug. 17 at 6:30 pm via Zoom Meeting. If you wish to participate, simply email Jill Gordon, Shakespeare enthusiast, at gordongrp@comcast.net to get the Zoom Meeting info.

Join Bud Werner Memorial Library for a Musical Scavenger Hunt in downtown Steamboat Springs. This walking adventure features trivia challenges highlighting many special places you’ll find only in our unique town. The first 200 to complete the course receive a free kiddie-size ice cream courtesy Lyon’s Corner Drug & Soda Fountain.

Play at your own pace, learning local intel on several historic spots. Once you hit each spot, answer the trivia questions and listen to the locale-inspired music before moving on. Stop for snacks, beverages, and restroom breaks as you make your way through downtown.

On August 10 & 11 from 1:00-2:00 pm, Basalt Regional Library presents the Virtual Philosophy Salon, a place for thinkers to discuss current events and big ideas. Drop in for a free form discussion of current events and the world around you through a philosophical lens.The topic: Utopia and the Pandemic. What is the best way to live? How is the Pandemic changing the world, for better or worse?

Nature’s Gifts

Bees give us more than honey. Join the Boulder Public Library and the BeeChicas live online on August 12 from 4:00-5:00 pm to learn about beeswax and how to make a Natural Sunscreen with freshly rendered beeswax from the BeeLiterate library hive. Recipes and materials list will be provided for this demonstration style workshop. Avoid all the chemical additives in commercial sunscreens and slather up!

School age kids and tweens are invited to join Jefferson County Public Library for a virtual Friday Crafternoon to explore Nature’s Paintbrushes on August 14 from 4:00-5:00 pm. All you need is construction paper or cardstock, paints (tempera is best, but watercolor is okay, too), and natural paintbrushes from your backyard or neighborhood – small branch from a bush, long skinny leaves, flowers that have passed their prime, sticks, pine needles, or whatever else you find!

So, you’ve wanted to compost kitchen scraps and garden waste but aren’t sure where to begin?  Join High Plains Library District on August 13 at 10:00 am for Composting Basics, an online presentation with Master Gardeners, Katey Nyborg and Jane Luettgen. They’ll provide you with tips and tricks for starting the hottest compost bin in the neighborhood.

Acts of Creation

Join Mesa County Libraries at 10 am on August 8 at Mother’s Park in Collbran for an outdoor craft – Tie-Dying! The library will provide face masks for you to make your own creations to take home. This event is free and for all ages. Please respect social distancing, and be prepared for outdoor weather conditions.

Join Broomfield Public Library for Sew Broomfield, inventHQ’s monthly sewing workshop on August 27 from 5:00-6:00 pm. for a beginner level project (materials provided). Follow along with the video or handout to complete the sewing project and then join inventHQ a few days later for an optional google hangout for a show-and-tell of everyone’s projects and socializing. Materials can be picked up from the Broomfield Public Library at the reference desk upstairs starting 7 days before the program.

Professional and local authors and writers of the Colorado Authors League (CAL) donated copies of their books into global non-profit Little Free Library locations statewide July 26 through August 2 as part of Book Bomb week.

Denver Architecture Foundation Launches Free Audio Tour of Downtown Denver | Mile High CRE
Denver Architecture Foundation (DAF) has released two significant audio tour journeys, free and accessible at denveraudiotours.org, featuring 24 locations historically significant to Denver and highlighting more than a century of the Mile High City’s architecture and cultural history.

Learning for All

Bringing Your Museum or Library to Virtual Audiences (Part 1) | August 11 @ 10:00 am MT
It might seem daunting to share the stories and resources in your museum digitally. Join Megan Smith and Carrie Dickerson from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, WY, as they introduce how they share some of their digital resources, including live virtual field trips, videos, and online teaching modules. They will share their experiences in developing these products and participants will even go on a mini virtual field trip.

Libraries Build Pathways to Wellbeing | August 26 @ 11:00 am MT
Through mixed methods research, the Rural Library Service & Social Wellbeing project found that a) public libraries are a component of social wellbeing outcomes in rural communities, and b) there are ways libraries provide service that influence outcomes. In this webinar you’ll hear about the design and outcomes of our research, the Evidence-Based No Rules Tools under development, and how qualitative data coding made it all possible.
