Super Service

During the month of August, patrons of Wellington Public Library can bring school supplies to the library in exchange for dollar-for-dollar fine forgiveness. All school supplies will be given to Wellington Schools. This is a great opportunity to take care of your fines while helping local teachers and students. Estes Valley Library offers patrons extra convenience with the option to pick up Holds from The Twig: EVCC Mini-Branch. Holds placed via the library catalog are transported from the downtown library to the Estes Valley Community Center where they are loaded into a high-tech locker system. To retrieve Holds, patrons scan their library card at the locker and wait for the locker door that corresponds to their Hold to pop open, at which check-out is complete. Very cool.

Join Florrisant Public Library on August 29 at 7:00 pm for Medicare 101, a live webinar that provides and opportunity to gain an understanding of the basic Medicare benefits of Medicare Part A, B, C, D, costs and coverage, enrollment and coordination and to learn about other insurance options.

Are you ready for some football!? The NFL season is just around the corner, which means it’s time for fantasy football! If you’ve never played, it’s time to learn how. Adults and teens are invited to Introduction to Fantasy Football at Jefferson County Public Library on August 25 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Basic football knowledge is helpful, but not required.

Lake County Public Library will commemorate Women’s Equality Day with a screening of Sister’s Strong: Elected Women in Colorado, a 2016 documentary about the important role elected women have played in Colorado.  Doors open at 6:30 on August 27, and the program starts at 7:00.

Grants Promote Rural Development in Targeted States
Laura Jane Musser Fund: Rural Initiative Program
The Laura Jane Musser Fund encourages collaborative and participatory efforts among citizens in communities in Colorado, Hawaii, Minnesota, and Wyoming, as well as the Rio Grande Valley, Deep East Texas, and the Brazos Valley regions of Texas. The Fund supports efforts that will help to strengthen individual rural towns in the targeted states in a number of civic areas. The applicant community must have a population of 10,000 or fewer and must be able to demonstrate the rural characteristics of their location and support from a diverse cross-section of community members and institutions. Online applications may be submitted from September 3 through October 3, 2019. Specific grant guidelines and application procedures are available on the Fund’s website.

Support for Organizations in Bank Communities
BBVA Foundation
The BBVA Foundation supports nonprofit organizations that are making a positive impact in the communities the bank serves in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, and Texas. Program Supports Local Food Efforts
Environmental Protection Agency
Local Foods, Local Places helps cities and towns across the country protect the environment and human health by engaging with local partners to reinvest in existing neighborhoods as they develop local food systems. The application deadline is September 30, 2019.

Meow Mix

Westminster Public Library invites beginner and struggling readers between the ages of 5 and 12 to Caturdays at the Library on August 24 from 12:00-3:00 pm. Readers will gain confidence by sitting and reading to a cat from the Everyday Adoption Center at Westminster PetSmart. Bring your own book, or choose one from the library’s collection. Call the Children’s Desk (303-658-2306) to sign up for a 15 minute session.

Want to Namaste the morning away with rescue kittens? Join Aurora Public Library on August 24 at 10:30 am for Kitten Yoga, a unique 40-minute beginner’s yoga class while adorable, adoptable kittens and cats from the Aurora Animal Shelter roam the room. Please bring your own yoga mat or towel and wear comfortable clothing.

History Highlights

Gunnison Library presents The Gunnison Massacre: A Tribute to Tragedy at on September 4 from 7:00-8:00 pm. Historian Larry McDonald will recount the fascinating tale of the Gunnison-Beckwith Expedition of 1853, and the subsequent massacre of Captain Gunnison and seven members of his party. Find out what led up to the Massacre, if there were any survivors, who committed the horrible atrocity, and what the legacy of the expedition is today.

Local resident Lucille Schmitt will present part two of her program Historic Women of Red Feather at Red Feather Library on September 14 at 10:00 am. Schmitt’s fascination with the area prompted her to save all the stories and print that she could get her hands on. Women loom large in this sampling of her collection and attendees are encouraged to share their own stories and “old-time” memories.

Join Nederland Community Library on September 5 at 7:00 pm for History of the Caribou Mine, a slide show and talk presented by noted historian and speaker Ed Raines.
