The Friday Grab Bag is a weekly series that highlights fun, unique, and interesting happenings in Colorado libraries, and includes news from the Colorado State Library.

Before we begin, I wanted to share that we’ll be hosting an Overview and Q&A Webinar for State Grants to Libraries program on Tuesday, August 25 at noon (MDT). The session will be offered via Adobe Connect. Pick ‘n’ Mix

Delta County Libraries is offering take-home ornament-making kits to help decorate the 2020 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree!  The primary 2020 tree and up to 70 companion trees are coming from The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests (GMUG) and will display 10,000 ornaments that reflect Colorado’s history, culture, and natural resources.  You can help represent Delta County on a national stage by participating in this program.  Just pick up a kit at any library in Delta County during open hours in the month of August, take the kit home and make an ornament, and then return it to the library no later than August 29.

Join Clearview Library District and Denver podcaster Laura Krantz on August 25 from 6:30-7:30 pm for A Talk on The Wild Side. Krantz’s podcast “Wild Thing“, explores our fascination with Bigfoot and why we want to believe. Krantz will discuss how she stumbled on to this topic, as well as how she developed content for the episodes, the business side of podcasting, and plans for the next season (coming September 2020). Registration required. Attendees will receive an email with a link to the Zoom meet up prior to the event.

The early days of Mesa County saw the development of remote mining towns, communities, and post offices. Some of the post offices have stood the test of time while others were more short-lived. Join Mesa County Libraries for Discovering Early Post Offices of Mesa County on September 15 at 6:30 pm and learn about some of the lesser-known historic post offices in Mesa County, how they came to be, and the communities that they served. In-person seating is limited, and registration is required. Masks are mandatory. Attendees without a mask will be provided one when they arrive for the event.

Virtual Basics

Arapahoe Libraries invites adults and teens to learn about Internet Safety: Social Media Privacy on August 26 from 1:00-1:45. Find out how to protect your privacy and reputation on social media. Learn the rules you should follow when tweeting or Facebook posting. Also learn what cyberbullying is, how to recognize it and how to prevent it.

Explore Mobility 4 All: Using Google Maps with High Plains Library District on August 31 from 2:00-3:30 pm. Get directions, see transportation options, and search for sites near you all with the Google Maps app! You’ll learn how to download and use Google Maps to get directions using your preferred transportation method, be it foot, car, bicycle, public transportation, or ride-sharing service. Bring your smartphone and your Apple ID or Google Play Store password so that you can download the app.

Let’s Move

Learn Martial Arts from your living room with Jefferson County Public Library via a virtual Kids Martial Arts Class on August 24 from 4:00-4:30 pm. This fun, interactive beginner Martial Arts course will get your child up off of the couch and moving. Your child will love learning the exciting, and challenging moves to get their blood pumping and the sweat flowing. No experience needed. Suitable for ages 4-12.

Thanks to technology, Vail Public Library is able to offer Virtual Zoomba Class most Mondays at 5:30 pm during our extended Stay At Home! Zumba is perfect for everybody and every body! Each class is designed to bring people together to sweat it on – no previous dance experience required.

Learning for All

Libraries Build Pathways to Wellbeing | August 26 @ 11:00 am MT
Through mixed methods research, the Rural Library Service & Social Wellbeing project found that a) public libraries are a component of social wellbeing outcomes in rural communities, and b) there are ways libraries provide service that influence outcomes. In this webinar you’ll hear about the design and outcomes of our research, the Evidence-Based No Rules Tools under development, and how qualitative data coding made it all possible.

Tackling Racism in Classic Children’s Literature | August 25 @ 9:00 am MT
We all know that there are outdated and racist classics on our shelves. These books reflect a homogenous past, yet they still thrive in an ostensibly multicultural present. How do we hold fast to intellectual freedom while solidifying our commitment to diversity and inclusiveness? Nashville Public Library spent a year asking that question and the resulting work can be replicated by other libraries seeking to apply an anti-racist lens to their collections. Join us as Klem-Marí Cajigas and Lindsey Patrick-Wright offer insight and suggestions for us to re-evaluate our own collections.

Grants & Funding

Denver Area Funding: NNLM All of Us Community Engagement Network
The awards funded through the NNLM All of Us Community Engagement Network will cover planning projects to address health literacy needs in communities and support library programming in the Denver area.

  • The Health Literacy Planning Subaward for up to $4,500 will help libraries and community partners develop plans for improving health literacy and access to health information.

 

  • The Denver Area All of Us Local Ambassador Program Support Award for up to $2,500 will fund programming by a library, health organization or community based organization. The programming should include a component to support the All of Us Local Ambassador Program in Greater Denver. This can include an opportunity for an All of Us ambassador to speak to program participants or distribution of information about the All of Us program.

Programs should start no earlier than Nov. 2, 2020, and be completely finished by April 15, 2021. Applications are due by Sept. 18.
