Solar Eclipse 2017

The Great American Eclipse will happen this Monday, August 21. Libraries are celebrating in a big way with special events, educational programs, and viewing parties. Learn more about events at Colorado libraries.

Summer Cuisine

Chef Caroline Glover, owner of Annette Restaurant, will be at Aurora Public Libraries on August 21 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm to teach a class on Cooking using Fresh Ingredients. Participants will also enjoy food samples.

Pine River Library is offering a two-part series on fermentation—perfect for home cooks, bakers, and gardeners. Create your own pickled vegetable mix on August 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 during Pickling and Fermentation 101. Then learn to bake your own sourdough from scratch on September 6 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm with Getting “Started” with Sourdough. Registration required for both events.

Nucla Public Library is hosting a community Picnic Potluck in the park, August 25 at 5:30 pm. Bring a side dish to share and a book for the book swap.

Super Science

Montrose Regional Library offers monthly STREAM programming for kids ages 8-13. The third Monday of each month at 4:00 pm, kids can take part in a science- or art-focused activity, like this month’s egg drop on August 21. Registration is required.

Explore your Mad Scientist skills at Boulder’s Reynolds Branch Library, August 30 from 4:00 to 5:00 pm. Kids age 3+ can get down and dirty in the lab making slime, exploding candy, and erupting volcanoes.

Life as Art

Bud Werner Memorial Library is hosting a three-day Spellbinders training workshop for up to 10 participants interested in learning about the oral storytelling tradition. Workshops will take place August 23, 24, & 26. Register by August 18.

Experience Life on the Eastern Plains of Colorado with Jane Milne at John C. Fremont Library, August 22 at 7:00 pm. Ms. Milne uses autoharp music to tell the story of a pioneer woman who survived the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and the Colorado wilderness.

Mesa County Libraries seeks entries for their 2017 Culture Fest. This juried art show is competitive and is open to artists 18 and older who live in Mesa County. Winning entries will be honored at an art show reception on November 3 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm; the exhibit will be on display October 27, 2017 through January 4, 2018 at the Central Library. Culture Fest is Saturday, November 4 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Central Library. See the library website for contest details.

Build a Better Relationship with Your Computer at Gunnison Library, August 21 at 7:00 pm. Help protect your online data by learning about passwords, virus protection, safe browsing, and more with IT professional Derek Breiner.

Protect your finances by learning how to identify potential fraud and exploitation. Basalt Regional Library presents Senior$afe, an informational session on how you and your loved ones can avoid becoming victims of fraud, on August 18 from 4:00 to 5:00 pm.

Scholarships & Grants

State Grants to Libraries funding is available for 2017-18! Eligible public, school, and academic libraries are encouraged to submit a short eligibility form by September 15. Funds can be used books, e-books, database subscriptions, and other educational resources.

Professional Development Opportunities

Colorado State Library consultants will be in Durango on September 21 & 22 for CSL Share & Learn, an event that combines professional learning with time for sharing. Registration is open through September 15 for this free event, open to all library and museum staff. We hope you will join us!

Registration ends August 25 for the CLEL (Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy) Conference, which takes place September 8, 2017 in Longmont.

CSL in Session is a free online learning series from the Colorado State Library with new sessions monthly. Coming up next: Workplace Bullying: Word Can Hurt More Than You Think. August 24, 12:00 to 1:00 pm MDT.
