The Friday Grab Bag is a weekly series that highlights fun, unique, and interesting happenings in Colorado libraries, and includes news from the Colorado State Library.

Celebrating Women’s Suffrage

All ages are invited to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment with Garfield County Libraries with an immersive living history experience, I Now Pronounce You Lucy Stone on August 18 at 5:00 pm.  Judith Kalaora, founder and artistic director of History At Play will introduce Stone, who was an ardent supporter of human rights. Always fierce, her belief that women and men be equal was evident in both her political and personal endeavors.

Join Grand County Library District  for Celebrate the Right to Vote with Trivia on August 26 from 7:00-8:00 pm. What was the first state to provide women suffrage? How many bubbles are in a bar of Dove soap? Get your team together or play on your own to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution as we play trivia, topic: voting.

It took activists and reformers many decades to win the right to vote for women in the United States and on August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was finally ratified. Join Arapahoe Libraries for Active Minds: Women’s Suffrage in the U.S. on August 25 from 2:00-3:00 pm for the story of women’s right to vote in the United States 100 years later. Highlights include the role of Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and a discussion of current issues around gender equality in our political process and leadership.

Park It

Join Bud Werner Memorial Library on August 28 from 5:30-7:00 pm for Ukes on the Green, a social-distanced, in-person, ukulele jam on The Green at the Yampa River Botanic Park. Say, “goodbye Zoom,” and come together to jam in person. The Green has plenty of room for social distancing and it is in a setting that would make anyone want to play the ukulele and sing along. All levels, and even musicians who play a different instrument, are welcome.

Mesa County Libraries hosts outdoor Story Time in the Park  at 10:00 am on August 27 in Long Family Memorial Park. Enjoy outdoor fun with books, songs, and a watermelon fan craft! Feel free to bring your picnic blankets and snacks! Please be prepared for outdoor weather conditions.

Eagle Valley Library District is excited to invite families back for Storytimes on the Lawn. Stories, songs and action rhymes at family storytimes are appropriate for ages 6 and under. Meet on the libraries’ lawns and pick up a “Take & Make” craft to keep the good times going at home. Click here for attendance guidelines. Schedule is as follows, though note that events are weather dependent and may cancel due to inclement weather.

What’s a podcast and why should I have one? Learn about how to start your own podcast for your museum or library and find a whole new audience outside your walls for your programs and collections. Learn about budget, technology, production, and more in this informative session, the first of a two-part series. Podcasting 101 is supported in part by CARES Act funding through the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Starting and Growing A Library of Things | August 19 @ 8:00 am MT
A Library of Things expands the role of libraries in the sharing economy. Learn how to curate a circulating collection of objects to help patrons save money while being green.

Vail Public Library receives a National Endowment for the Arts Big Read grant | Vail Daily
Vail Public Library is a recipient of a grant of $9,150 to host the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read in Eagle County. An arts endowment initiative in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens how the community understands the world, different communities and fellow humans through the joy of sharing a good book.

Little Free Library becomes Colorado community hub | The Gazette
Evergreen resident Mary O’Rourke established a Little Free Library in an old Civilian Corps era cabin on her property in an effort to keep a sense of community while practicing social distancing.

Library sees decline in visitation, working on Clifton branch concepts | The Daily Sentinel
Mesa County Libraries received about half the visitation of a typical year amid scaled back programming due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Grants & Funding Opportunities

2020-21 Workforce Diploma Pilot Program
The Workforce Diploma Pilot Program (WDPP) was established in 2019 to support Colorado adults without a high school credential. This program provides financial incentives for eligible providers who are able to re-engage adults and support them in obtaining a high school diploma and other credentials.

Computer Science Education Grants
Colorado Computer Science Teacher Education Grant Program and the Colorado Computer Science Education Activities Grant for the 2020-21 school year are now open for applications! Application deadline for both grants is September 11, 2020.
