Health & Wellness

Buena Vista Public Library invites those 12 and older to Teen/ Adult CPR & First Aid. Living in a small, secluded and active community makes knowing CPR & 1st Aid a huge asset. This is a 2-part course – April 30 and May 2 from 1:00-5:00 pm.  For more information, contact Kelly Nary at knary@buenavistalibrary.org.

Join Anything Libraries on April 27 from 11:00 – 12:00 pm to learn new tools to integrate mindfulness into your daily routine. Meditation, Mindfulness and Technology will teach mindfulness skills focused on breath work as well as eating mindfully and mindful walking.  You will also be introduced to applications that you can use on your devices to incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine. No registration is required.

Bud Werner Public Library hosts An evening with Tibetan physician Dr. Jampa Yonten on June 4 from 7:00-8:00 pm for Health Perspectives: Tibetan View on Death and Dying. In this talk, Dr. Jampa Yonten, a Tibetan physician who is visiting from India, will speak to the unique view Tibetans hold regarding dying, death and rebirth. Tibetan Medicine is one of the oldest medical systems on earth, believed by the Tibetans to be taught directly by the Medicine Buddha and practiced continuously for over 2500 years.

All ages are invited to Wilkinson Public Library for Community Narcan Training from 5:30 – 6:30 pm on April 30. Jessica Eaddy of the Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention will talk about public health and legislative initiatives and offer a naloxone training. Naloxone is a synthetic drug which blocks opiate receptors in the nervous system and can stop opioid overdoses if administered quickly enough.

Poudre River Public Library District hosts SummitStone Health Resource Hours from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on April 29 (and most Wednesdays). SummitStone/PATH certified case workers provide free drop-in “resource hours,” which are not exclusive to homeless individuals; SummitStone/PATH staff will meet with anyone to provide appropriate referrals to other community agencies if they do not meet the PATH program criteria.

Learn the holistic perspective of health from an indigenous Nahuas approach by making ungüentos (ointments) in an easy and traditional way. Boulder Public Library’s Traditional Tinctures workshop will be conducted in English and Spanish and is appropriate for ages 12 and up. Space is limited, please register to confirm your spot. All attendees must fill out BPL’s Acknowledgement of Risk and Release Form prior to attending this program.

Pick ‘n’ Mix

We rounded up a number of National Poetry Month events a couple of weeks ago, but there’s still time to get your fix.

Manco Public Library invites all ages to Celebrate the Four Corners Poets on April 27 to see and hear four Navajo women share their art and poetry.  Readings will take place at 2:00 pm and visual artwork will be displayed on the library’s Art Wall through the end of April.

Do you know someone who is on the Autism spectrum? Would you like to learn more about it? Come have fun, create puzzle piece crafts, get information, and socialize with others at the New Castle Branch Library’s Autism Celebration today, April 26. Drop in anytime between 3 and 5 pm to participate or call the library at 970-984-2346 for more info.

Discover the basics of wolf biology, behavior and ecology with Bellvue, Colorado’s W.O.L.F. Sanctuary on April 27 from 1:00 – 2:00 pm at Clearview Library District. You’ll also meet a Sanctuary animal ambassador! No registration required. All ages welcome, but children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Adults are invited to join Lafayette Public Library and Justine Vigil-Tapia, a member of the Boulder County Latino History Project Advisory Board, for a Lafayette Historical Society presentation on Latino life in Lafayette in the 1960’s and 1970’s on May 4 from 10:30 am – 12:00 pm.

Pitkin County Library hosts children and young adults ages 10 and up for an Escape Room on May 10 at 4:00 pm. Participants will be given a challenge that requires them to work together to win a prize! Each session will provide a different puzzle to solve and a different theme. Possible scenarios may require literary references, creating a piece of art, video clues, physical challenges, or assistance from a librarian in order to “break out” of the room.

Join Pueblo City Library on April 27 and travel back in time to hear stories of real women who made a significant impact on the West, be entertained with lively, historical portrayals and go on an educational adventure with the Unconventional Women of the West.  Doors open at 6:30 pm. Don’t be late!

Montrose Public Library invites all ages to Learn your Scopes with BCAS. Bring your telescopes and your questions to a teaching session with the Black Canyon Astronomical Society on May 11 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm.

Digitization Education & Funding Opportunities

Save the Date! On June 27-28 the Colorado Historical Records Advisory Board (CHRAB), in partnership with the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) and the Colorado State Library, will be offering a free Archives and Digitization 101 workshop at the James A. Michener Library at the University of Northern Colorado.  More information and registration details for this event are coming soon.

CHRAB is now accepting applications for their 2019-2020 re-grant program.  CHRAB funds a wide variety of projects related to the management, care and the enhanced access of historic archival collections.
