TEEN MENTAL HEALTH: IN THEIR OWN WORDS

In this interactive session, we will highlight this issue by sharing interview clips from teens who have experienced mental health issues, exploring Colorado specific research, and looking at how the pandemic has placed additional stress and challenges on teens. We will brainstorm how libraries can be part of larger community conversations and assist teens in need.

Children’s services are a bedrock of public libraries and have been for over a century. But these days, many young children also spend time in preschool and childcare programs, while others learn and grow at home. So, just where do young children learn best? Wherever the principles of Ideal Learning are followed!  Join Growing Readers Together staff Joyce Johnson and Gail Yerbic to discover the principles of Ideal Learning, including their origin in the Early Care & Education field, what they teach us about supporting children’s learning, and whether or not they apply to the library setting. (Spoiler alert- they do!)

The internet offers a variety of communication channels that most of us are relying on during the Pandemic. Personal relationships aside, poor online communication skills can harm your productivity and effectiveness. This means more emails, phone calls or repeated work when something is misunderstood. In this session we will discuss simple ways to improve your online communication skills with both your co-workers and patrons.

The Connected Learning model builds on these principles, and libraries are the perfect environment for this type of learning, providing a place for teens to connect, engage, learn, and thrive. In this interactive session, explore the benefits of Connected Learning, what it looks like in different library settings, and how you can cultivate it in your library, using content from YALSA.
